In celebration of the 5th anniversary of Cardinal Newman Centre for Culture and Arts Performance of Macau, we are delighted to present Mr. Mak Chi Keong’s solo exhibition, “Heart & Palette . The exhibition exhibits nearly 50 works marking a significant milestone in the artist's journey.
Mak’s artistry seamlessly weaves together his enduring passion for Cantonese Porcelain with exceptional painting skills, composing a dialogue that resonates with personal memories. His pieces reflect the tradition of exquisite composition, intricate brushwork, and vibrant colours capturing the profound reflections on art and a nuanced perception of life. The themes found in traditional Cantonese Porcelain — ranging from landscapes and historical figures to floral and auspicious motifs — symbolize a yearning for beauty and resonate with cultural richness.
Among the works on display, 11 patterns featuring reminiscent of classic colourful porcelains that were drawn from memory and imagination, offering a narrative insight into his creation. For example, "A Hundred Children Painting" reveals his deep empathy for humanities and culture, while "Dwelling in Fuchun Mountains" showcases his expansive artistic vision. As Mak reflects, "These patterns can be manifested in porcelain painting completely." His passion for calligraphy and the incorporation of Chinese literature add a poetic layer to his art, broadening the viewer's experience and mirroring his abudent life.
When Mak captures the nuances of life through painting, it allows him to express his emotions with the palette. This unique perspective is beautifully encapsulated in the phrase: "Mountains seem closer when you are at ease; universe will be board when you are open-minded."
